What Commander speaks on.

Commander Paul Smith didn’t just rise through the ranks, he made history doing it. As the first Black officer to command a Royal Canadian Navy warship and later the first Black Commanding Officer of HMCS York, Commander Smith’s career is a masterclass in bold leadership, clear vision, and leading teams through complexity, pressure, and change.

In this powerful keynote, Commander Smith unpacks what it means to lead when you don’t fit the mold, and how individuals, teams, and organizations can lead with clarity, influence with integrity, and perform under pressure, even when the stakes are high and the spotlight is on.

This is more than a leadership talk. It’s a challenge to every audience: don’t just lead the way it’s always been done — lead in a way that redefines what’s possible.

Straight from the room.

We brought Commander Paul Smith in for our 420-person leadership summit for a mixed audience of operations leaders, union reps, and new managers. His breakdown of “mission command” landed because he translated it into simple behaviors (clear intent, tight decision rights, fast feedback) and then pressure-tested it with a short scenario he ran live from the stage. The room got noticeably quieter during the section on calm communication under stress, and afterward our plant GMs asked for his 1-page briefing template to use in daily huddles.

Commander Smith delivered “Breaking the Mold” as a 60-minute keynote followed by a fireside chat at our defense industry association conference (about 900 attendees). The most useful moment was when he talked through how he kept multinational teams aligned on Op CARIBBE without over-controlling, and then tied it back to inclusive leadership in high-stakes environments. We saw a spike in post-session sign-ups for our cross-functional task forces because he gave people a practical way to participate without needing formal authority.

We hired Commander Smith for a virtual session with 180 engineering and product leaders during a re-org, and he handled the Q&A with a level, candid tone that reduced a lot of noise in the chat. His examples from HMCS KINGSTON and SUMMERSIDE made the point that “clarity beats certainty,” which our leaders repeated in follow-up meetings. My only caveat is we could have used another 15–20 minutes for questions because the audience had more scenarios they wanted him to weigh in on.
